[04:03:40]<paul121[m]>That's a really neat idea idoshmida !
[04:03:55]<paul121[m]>Makes me think of the JM Fortier online course https://www.themarketgardener.com/course/
[04:04:08]<paul121[m]>Always thought something like that could be made more "open"
[04:06:28]<paul121[m]>I'm not sure the best way of implementing this... maybe a `crop protocol` asset, that you can reference to existing crop taxonomies?
[04:08:04]<paul121[m]>It would really cool if a protocol could predefine things like "planting density" that are then auto-filled when creating seeding logs for that crop :-)
[04:09:14]<paul121[m]>Or even just default units for `seeding` and `harvest`... which would then prepopulate the quantities for such logs of that crop

[08:29:15]<mstenta[m]>Yea, great ideas idoshmida
[08:29:28]<mstenta[m]>That is sort of what I envisioned the Crop/variety taxonomy being used for in the future, actually
[08:29:51]<mstenta[m]>If you edit a Crop/variety term, you'll notice that there are some (old and unused) fields like "Days to maturity"
[08:30:20]<mstenta[m]>I think it would make more sense for that information to be stored in taxonomy terms than on assets (although I can see the argument both ways)
[08:30:55]<mstenta[m]>Assets are intended to be the "real things" you are working with, while the terms are the "ideas" that can apply to multiple assets
[08:31:27]<mstenta[m]>eg: "Corn" as a concept (crop/variety) vs "2019 Corn in Field A" as an actual asset (planting)
[08:31:51]<mstenta[m]>The "Planting" vs "Crop/variety" vs "Seeding" terminology has been a real point of confusion though...
[08:32:30]<mstenta[m]>I'm interested in hearing other ideas - we may consider renaming some things in farmOS 2.x
[08:32:50]<mstenta[m]>eg: instead of "Planting" assets, maybe it would be better to call them "Plants"
[08:33:01]<mstenta[m]>and instead of "Crop/variety", "Plant types"?
[08:33:50]<mstenta[m]>That might be more consistent with "Animals" (asset) and "Species/breed" (term) in the livestock module
[08:37:56]<mstenta[m]>These ideas have been discussed in a few places, but it might be worth starting a forum post to get community feedback
[08:38:14]<mstenta[m]>The sooner the better, as farmOS 2.x dev is underway and we'll need to decide some of these things soon
[09:52:11]<mstenta[m]>Of course, the other big consideration here is status quo... what is the cost of changing things that people are already used to?
[09:52:40]<mstenta[m]>So we need to balance the needs of newcomers to the project and those who have been using it and are accustomed to the existing terminology
[10:37:21]<mstenta[m]>For future reference, here is one relevant issue on GitHub that we could link to if we make a forum discussion for this: https://github.com/farmOS/farmOS/issues/218
[10:37:44]<mstenta[m]>There are also some email exchanges I've had with similar thoughts I can dig up if necessary

[12:05:19]<symbioquine>In case folks haven't seen it already, we're having some interesting discussion on a possible future direction for farmOS.py in https://github.com/farmOS/farmOS.py/issues/31 Additional inputs/viewpoints are of course welcome!
[12:07:17]<mstenta[m]>i've been meaning to read through that symbioquine !
[12:07:37]<mstenta[m]>excited to see what you and paul121 have been brainstorming
