[11:43:38]<mstenta>Hi andygraybeal :-)
[11:43:54]<mstenta>farmOS Beta 4 is out!
[11:44:04]<mstenta>And I've already started Beta 5
[12:23:10]* digdug1 has joined #farmos
[12:24:15]<digdug1>hi
[12:24:15]<farmBOT>ni hao
[12:35:19]<mstenta>hi digdug1
[12:35:24]<mstenta>how's it going?
[12:35:31]<mstenta>welcome to #farmOS
[12:42:29]<digdug1>hi. going good. how are you?
[12:43:24]<digdug1>sorry had to step out for a min
[12:47:32]<digdug1>I have a questions about areas and taxonomy in farmos
[12:51:00]<digdug1>is it possible to link a lets say a row/bed or greenhouse to a property?
[12:54:17]<digdug1>basically make a row/bed a sub entry for a property so that info put in the row/bed area shows on the property area. like plantings, inputs, etc.
[13:04:49]<mstenta>hey! sorry stepped away for a moment myself
[13:05:12]<digdug1>cool
[13:05:24]<mstenta>to answer your question: yes! (sort of)
[13:05:29]<mstenta>you can arrange areas hierarchically
[13:05:42]<mstenta>so you can assign a row/bed as a child area of your property
[13:06:03]<mstenta>(or of a particular field, or even of another row/bed - it's very flexible)
[13:06:05]<digdug1>thats what i was thinking
[13:06:43]<digdug1>ok give me a sec to browse there
[13:07:00]<mstenta>i say "sort of", because right now arranging hierarchically is mainly just for organization... it doesn't "do" anything yet...
[13:07:23]<digdug1>ok i see
[13:07:29]<mstenta>by "do" i mean, for example, it doesn't show plantings from child areas in a parent area... or something like that
[13:07:37]<mstenta>we could add that feature, but it doesn't do that right now
[13:08:07]<digdug1>yeah thats pretty much what i'm talking about.
[13:08:25]<mstenta>to change the hierarchy of areas (assuming you are running the latest farmOS) - go to /farm/areas, and click "change" next to "Hierarchy"
[13:08:40]<digdug1>so how would the weights work to kind of head in that direction?
[13:08:46]<mstenta>that will bring you to the standard Drupal taxonomy hierarchy edit form for the farm_areas vocabulary, so you can rearrange them like you would any other vocabulary
[13:09:01]<mstenta>weights?
[13:09:20]<mstenta>or do you mean parents?
[13:09:28]<digdug1>in admin/structure/taxonomy/farm_areas
[13:09:42]<digdug1>or am i in the wrong place?
[13:10:01]<mstenta>ok yea... so the weights in that page are simply for arranging the areas in an arbitrary order (so they aren't just alphabetical which is the default)
[13:10:41]<digdug1>oh ok.
[13:10:52]<mstenta>the "weights" in that page are actually core Drupal... for managing taxonomies in general ... not farmOS specific
[13:11:02]<mstenta>we are using the taxonomy system to represent areas
[13:11:29]<digdug1>ok
[13:11:30]<mstenta>(although this might change in the future: https://www.drupal.org/node/2363393)
[13:11:55]<mstenta>the benefit of using taxonomy for areas was that we got the ability to arrange them hierarchically out-of-the-box
[13:12:15]<mstenta>and the ability to create them on-the-fly from log records
[13:12:44]<mstenta>(so you could, for example, add a new "Activity" log and associate it with an area that doesn't exist yet - and that area will be created for you in the background)
[13:15:18]<mstenta>do you want to brainstorm a little about the feature you had in mind?
[13:16:51]<digdug1>ok I couldnt find hierarchy. it was farm> areas> row/bed> edit> relations. Then i put it under MyFarm CSA
[13:17:28]<mstenta>go to the farm dashboard, then click the Areas tab - that's where you'll find the hierarchy link
[13:17:33]<digdug1>thought i was loosing my mind lol
[13:17:37]<mstenta>:-)
[13:17:56]<mstenta>also... what version of farmOS are you using? that would help... i've been moving some things around lately
[13:18:06]<mstenta>make sure we're talking about the same things :-)
[13:18:51]<mstenta>i'm doing a bunch of nice UI work on beta5 right now
[13:19:01]<mstenta>i think it will be a lot better
[13:19:27]<digdug1>um not sure. its a fresh install from yesterday but not the dev version. i think beta4
[13:19:35]<mstenta>great! :-)
[13:19:43]<mstenta>that has all the new Openlayers stuff
[13:19:53]<digdug1>yeah i noticed that.
[13:20:08]<mstenta>(beta5 is what i'm working on now... not released yet... end of the month probably...)
[13:20:41]<digdug1>i broke beta3 after a core update and just scrapped it and started fresh
[13:21:49]<digdug1>after that i decided to start learning drush yesterday and so far so good.
[13:23:28]<mstenta>cool
[13:23:42]<mstenta>sorry to hear beta3 broke it :-(
[13:23:53]<digdug1>it happens
[13:24:06]<mstenta>if you ever hit an issue during upgrade, let me know! i want to make sure the upgrades work smoothly
[13:24:18]<digdug1>i have bad luck with drupal update
[13:24:20]<mstenta>we can file an issue and fix it
[13:24:43]<mstenta>yea... it usually works pretty smoothly, but it helps to know the ins-and-outs sometimes :-)
[13:25:02]<mstenta>sometimes weird things happen and fixing it requires some knowledge
[13:25:34]<mstenta>but like i said, my goal is to avoid those weird things... so i try to test the upgrade paths before releasing
[13:25:46]<mstenta>sometimes i miss things though
[13:26:08]<digdug1>understand
[13:26:24]<mstenta>you picked a good time to start using farmOS, though! things are going to explode over the next few months
[13:26:31]<mstenta>i have a lot of plans :-)
[13:27:24]<digdug1>i'm glad to hear that. the farm community needs projects like this.
[13:28:03]<mstenta>where are you located? and what kind of farm? if you don't mind my asking...
[13:31:06]<digdug1>i'm looking around right now but there was a link that was broken i noticed yesterday. i'll find it eventually but instead of following a path of localhost/farm/admin it goes to localhost/admin or something
[13:31:36]<mstenta>ok yea if you find it again let me know
[13:31:52]<mstenta>if you have a drupal.org account, you can file issues here: http://drupal.org/project/issues/farm
[13:32:02]<digdug1>I'm in TN. right now it's not really a farm but its in the works.
[13:32:08]<mstenta>(as well as feature requests, questions, etc)
[13:32:41]<digdug1>ok sounds good
[13:32:42]<mstenta>cool! i've driven through TN a few times...
[13:32:59]<digdug1>yeah i love it here
[13:33:35]<mstenta>FYI: there are a number of different "projects" for farmOS (list here: http://drupal.org/project/farm), but if you're not sure where the issue should go, just add it to the main "farm" issue queue and i'll move it as needed
[13:34:03]<mstenta>I have to sign off... my cousin's wedding is this afternoon, so I've got to get going.
[13:34:19]<mstenta>Talk to you later perhaps!
[13:34:44]<digdug1>cool have fun & be good.
